Safari Destination Locations in Tanzania

Serengeti National Park

The most famous safari destination in the world. This is an UNESCO World Heritige Site. Any safari itinerary of 4 days or longer we reccommend including Serengeti National Park. All African plains safari animals are present here including black rhinoceros. Central Serengeti (Seronera) is the most accessable part of the park and has reliably good game viewing any time of the year. This area has a large number of lions, cheetahs, and leopards. There are many accommodation choices here including some of the most exclusive such as Four Seasons Serengeti. There is an airstrip here connecting Kilimanjaro Airport, Arusha Airport, and Zanzibar Airport. Seronera is approximately an 8 hour drive from Moshi. The migration herds are in this area typically during the months of April-June and November-mid December. Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) is an amazing place to be during the months of late December - March. The migration herds settle in this area with zebras giving birth typically in December and wildebeest giving birth in February. This is an active time for preditors. Ndutu staddles the Southern Serengeti and a portion of Ngorongoro Conservation Area (not the crater). The animals wander freely between the two. If you choose a safari here we will arrange permits for both destinations for the best game viewing. Many tented camps in this area are only open seasonally December - March. There is an airstrip here for flyi-in/fly-out safaris. Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) is the location which contains the Mara River where the famous migration herds cross the crocodile infested waters. At this portion of the Mara River both sides of the river are in the Serengeti. The migration herds are typically in this area from July - October. The accommodations here book quickly during these times so planning early is necessary. Whether you see an actual river crossing requires a bit of luck. You might see one within minutes of arriving in this area or you can wait for days and only see large herds looking like they might cross at any time but never crossing. There is plenty of other game viewing in this area besides the migration herds. Kogatende is a few hour drive further from Moshi than Seronera or Ndutu but there is an airstrip here if you would like to fly-in/fly-out.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is just east of Serengeti National Park, approximately a four and a half hour drive from the town of Moshi. The main tourist attraction here is Ngorongoro Crater, one of the top safari destinations in Africa. This is technically a caldera - a collapsed volcano and is approximately 20km in diameter. Because of the steep crater walls which go as high as 600m (2,000ft) the large majority of the 25,000 - 30,000 large mammals inside the crater live there year-round. This number includes approximately 7,000 wildebeests, 6,000 hyenas, 4,000 zebras, 3,000 elands, 3,000 gazelles, 300 elephants, 65 lions, and 30 black rhinoceros. Also present are African buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, hippopotamus, ostrich, warthogs, babboons, among others. Besides the wildlife, the crater itself is very beautiful. The downside of Ngorongoro Crater is that it is crowded with safari vehicles. There are no accommodations inside of the crater and all people must be out of the crater between the hours of 6pm until 6am. The environment is very fragile and this is done as a preservation measure. There is also a heafty added fee of $250/vehicle (plus 18%VAT = $295 USD) to enter into the crater which goes toward conservation expenses. This is in addition to the daily fee of being inside the Conservation Area. Because this destination is small and because of the crowds, nearly all safari itineraries only include one partial day inside of the crater. In 4 - 5 hours or so all will easily be able to be seen. Besides the crater itself, the NCA has other tourist interests. Olduvi Gorge Museum is an attraction that many find interesting. This is an important paleoantropological site made famous by the research and discoveries by Dr Louis Leakey and his wife Dr Mary Leakey on the origin of mankind. This site is located an approximate 90 minute drive west of Ngorongoro Crater. To visit this museum, advance payment must be made online by Hike, Talk, Stay Adventures so this must be planned before the start of your safari. This destination is possible as part of any safari itinerary which is traveling overland to/from the Serengeti. Because the NCA is not a national park, the indiginous tribes are allowed to reside inside the area. They are allowed to graze their animals inside the crater but same as the tourists, they must be out of the crater from 6pm until 6am. There is a good traditional Maasai village located in the NCA between the crater and Serengeti. If you would like to spend an hour or so to see and learn about the lifestyle of the Maasai this side trip is possible while traveling to/from the Serengeti. The government of Tanzania and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority is in a no-win situation currently. The number of Maasai in the area over the years has increased dramatically. And many are adapting a more modern lifestyle. This is putting a strain on the wildlife. The government has elected to offer to relocate Maasai families to other parts of the country but this has been not well accepted. Those organizations concerned with the protection of wildlife have urged the government to hurry this relocation. Those organizations interested in indiginous rights have strongly opposed this relocation.

Tarangire National Park

This is your destination if you love elephants. This park has in excess of 2,500 elephants. It is also distinctive for its large number of the unusual looking, giant baobab trees dottting the landscape. With the Tarangire River winding its way through the park and the scattering of baobab trees, this is a unique and scenic park. Game viewing here reaches it's peak during the driest months - January & February, July - October when the Tarangire River is the only water in the area. Numerous animals congregate along the river bank to drink and cool off. Besides the forementioned elephants, there are large numbers of giraffes, zebras, lions, wildebeests, cape buffaloes, hyenas, impalas, elands, Grant's gazelles, vervet monkeys, baboon, caracal, honey badger, and African wild dog. Nearly everything except no rhinoceros. There are a wide range of accommodations both inside of the park and just outside of the park. This destination is close enough to Moshi/Arusha to be done as a day trip but even spending up to 4 - 5 days here would not be boring especially if you have chosen one of the more luxurious accommodations. There is an airstrip inside of the park for small planes (18 -22 passengers typically) in case you want to fly to other safari destinations.

Lake Eyasi (Hadzabe Tribe)

Located just east of the southern portion of Ngorongoro Conservation Area is Lake Eyasi, a shallow soda lake. This area is the home of the most interesting of Tanzania's 120 tribes - the Hadzabe. This tribe is one of the few true hunter-gatherer tribes left in the world. They are a very friendly tribe and enjoy their lifestyle of hunting, foraging edible roots, and gathering wild honey and berries. They hunt by bow and arrow and are opportunistic, hunting anythhing from mice and small birds to giraffes. For larger prey they use arrows dipped in poison. They live in very simple huts and if they kill a large animal such as a giraffe, they relocate their huts to the kill site rather than try to bring the kill to their huts. Thier clothing is also opportunistic wearing donated clothing, animal skins, or nothing at all. Their knowledge of herbal medicine is remarkable. Their language incorporates unique clicking sounds similar to some tribal languages found in South Africa. The Tanzanian government has made various attempts to transition the Hadzabe lifestyle to a more modern lifestyle by offering free housing, schools, etc. But those efforts have been rejected by the tribe as they truly enjoy their current lifestyle. A trip to Lake Eyasi is an authentic and memorable addition to a safari.

Lake Natron

One of the most remote areas of Tanzania is Lake Natron just to the east of the Serengeti near the Kenyan border. The climate is unforgiving being dusty, hot and dry. It is sparcely populated with just a few Maasai villages in the area. Lake Natron is a remarkable shallow, alkaline lake with a water pH near that on ammonia. The only life that can survive in the waters is a type of algae that gives the water a bright orange-red color. This algae is favored by flamingos and the lake serves as the only breeding ground for 2.5 million lesser flamingos. Not far from the lake is Tanzania's only active volcano - Ol Doinyo Lengai ("Mountain of god" in the language of the Maasai). This volcano is sacred in the traditional Maasai religion and is a site of animal sacrifices. The mountain can be climbed in one day (starting during the night to avoid the searing sun). It is a very challenging climb due to the steepness and loose scree needing a lot of scrambling (using both hands and feet). Depending on how active the volcano is at the time, it may or may not be possible to climb. The view of the bright waters of Lake Eyasi, the colorful flamingos covering the lake, and the backdrop of Ol Doinyo Lengai is breathtaking. Surprisingly in this harsh environment is a narrow gorge with a beautiful waterfall. Here the water is pure and a hike and swim under the waterfall is a half day of refreshing enjoyment.
